Hard to tell unless you can describe it.

Owls Native to Florida....

Barn Owl, Barred Owl, Burrowing Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Screech Owl

The Barn Owl is strictly Nocturnal and it is rarely seen.

The others are more often heard of but not seen.

The Screech Owl will roost and hunt in gardens. The Great Horned Owl nests in forks of large trees, The Burrowing Owl is found in dry prairie habitats in the peninsula and the keys.

Of all the species mentioned in the previous answers, only the Great Horned Owl and the Barred Owl have the classic owl "Hoot". Either of these species is likely.

Good field guides like Golden Books "Birds of North America" include sonograms and descriptions of the noises they make, so if you can't observe the owl you might be able to check out one of those books for identifying it by it's call. Or if you have a local Natural Science museum ask them for any recordings or advice.

Florida has five owls: Great Horned, Barn, Burrowing, Screech and Barred.

As for which one you are hearing, is anyone's guess.

I hope this helps.
