What does it feel like when you have a cavity in your tooth? I've never had any cavities before, but I have a tooth now which is occasionally painful when I eat. If I eat sweet things I sometimes get a really severe pain in the tooth, but only for a few seconds. It's sometimes painful to chew on, but other times it's fine.

I can't see any obvious hole in the tooth, but I guess that doesn't mean much, right? I haven't been to the dentist in a couple of years (well, maybe a little longer than that actually) but I take really good care of my teeth so I'll be really upset if it is a cavity.

If I do have a cavity, what's it like getting a filling? Can I get a white filling in a back tooth?

I do have panic attacks sometimes and I have anxiety problems - would they be able to give me something if I need a filling so that I don't have a panic attack?

That sounds like a cavity. They will numb your tooth and you will hear the drill and feel the pressure, but its not that bad (wink). Some dentist will put you to sleep if you request it.

Sorry, it does sound like you have a cavity. Pain on eating sweet things is usually a good indicator of a cavity. But cavities only start to hurt when they are quite big, so you really need to see a dentist as soon as you can and get a filling. It's not that bad, the injection feels like a sharp pinch but after that you're numb so you won't feel any pain, just pressure and there are some weird nosies which can be kind of scary. When you go to the dentist he'll do an examination first and if you do have a cavity you'll have to make another appointment for the filling, so you can talk to the dentist at the first appointment and tell him you're anxious and he should be able to give you something to calm you down. And yes, you can get a white filling in a back tooth but personally I'd recommend amalgam for back teeth, especially if it's only one.

What Do Cavities Feel Like

Sorry to say it, but it does sound like you have a cavity. Usually having pain after eating sweet things is a good sign. Try to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Tell them you think you have a cavity and you are having some pain...maybe that will get you in faster. Getting a filling is not that bad. If you are nervous, the dentist can give you some medicine to calm your nerves and make the procedure better for you.

It is probably just the enamel worn down and is therefore sensitive to temperature etc, but you should get your teeth checked at least every 6 months. if there was a cavity, it could get worse and the problem could get quite bad and painful. if you don't believe me look at this question:

the pain of a filling is far less than leaving the problem and there is almost instant relief if a dentist cleans out a cavity and fills it. if you are scared, they can rub some local anaesthetic onto your gum before injecting you so you don't even feel the injection and sometimes the cavity is sooo tiny that they don't even need to use anaesthetic. please please do get it seen to, its probably nothing.

find a nice and sympathetic dentist too as this will make you feel at ease about visiting them. I travel 130 miles to visit my fav dentist! If you tell the dentist you're anxious, they are usually really supportive - after all they are paid a lot of money to be!

p.s., poor dental hygiene (even when you think you have good dental hygiene) can lead to bad breath so its worth going just for that!

You most likely have caries(cavity). I can tell because have had three fillings done.

the symptoms are:

1 pain when u take cold water
2 when u eat sugary things
3 and at times when u eat.

These days filling is not painful. the only time u might feel pain is when the dentist is trying to inject you. but do not fear, it wont take more that 10seconds.

i suggest you see your dentist as soon as possible if you don't want the tooth removed. (I have also had two removed)

Check out:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001055.htm

Symptoms of dental caries or cavities:
Toothache -- particularly after sweet, hot, or cold foods and drinks
Visible pits or holes in the teeth

Early treatment is less painful and less expensive than treatment of extensive decay. Most dentist use anesthetics like novocaine (local) or nitrous oxide (laughing gas- if you dont like injections). So it is not as painful.
You have to let your dentist know about your panic attacks before discussing treatments if you do have cavities.

I've had a few cavities drilled, it's no biggie. They either give you laughing gas, novicane, or both. I got laughing gas and when he drilled, it felt like sticking my teeth in cold ice cream. (I have sensitive teeth.) In other words, the pain is not that bad. I'm sure you could handle it.

Find a dentist who uses gas. But do see one immediately. If your tooth hurts sometimes and you don't all of a sudden it's going to go off like you never imagined - trust me - I made that mistake. Get ti fixed. With gas you won't be nervous - you wont care at all.

If you suck in air thru your mouth and you can feel it on the tooth and it feels kinda cool or hurts, then you have a cavity.
