A cavity should not hurt. Not unless it is getting deep. If it has gotten into the second layer of the tooth there may be cold or sweet sensitivity. Into the nerve? PAIN. During a simple filling the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic, the decay drilled out, and depending on what type of filling (alloy-silver or composite-toothcolored) the dentist does a few steps to keep the filling in place. If you see a dark spot on a tooth, have it checked out.

The first sign of a cavity is sensitivity ( hot and cold, sweets, even air). If you have any of these symptoms then you definatly need to see a dentist. Getting a filling is a simple procedure. The doctor will numb you with a shot of novacain, then drill into the tooth to remove the cavity, then fill it with either a composite (white) or amalgam (silver) filling. Your best bet would be to tell your dentist you want a composite filling, they last longer and are safer. You have never been to a dentist??? Its not bad at all. Just relax.

Depending where the cavity is located, it can feel like a hole on the tooth. Sometimes cavities can hurt from the sensitivity of the food. Your mouth is numb from the shot that you will get by the gums. You will feel the dentist drill to get the rotten part out and see him or her put a filling in place of the bad part.

a cavity might be painful (sudden onset of pain) or might be sensitive to hot& cold, but it might also never give pain at all.
to the trained eye (eg. the dentist's) the cavity might present itself as a discoloration under the surface of the enamel...and it feels different from healthy enamel when you use the probe to poke at it.
the dentist will give u topical gel to numb the place before he gives u a shot of local anesthetic, so the filling isn't supposed to be painful. he'll drill out the cavity, then put the filling material (amalgam or composite/white filling or keytec, etc) in. if it's painful, raise yr hand and let him know and you'll get another boost of anesthetic. :)
best way to detect a cavity...be fastidous with yr dental hygiene and visit the dentist regularly and not only when u experience pain!

Symptom of a cavity? Pain in the brain! Pain in the membrane! If you want to know if you are getting one, your dentist has a little pick thing he pokes around with and see's them. The filling part? First they give you a shot in your mouth where the cavity is located, then they drill out a little of the bad part, then they add "filling".

um u know u have a cavity when u eat something or do something in the mouth and u feel like a nerve pain in the tooth area like a shooting pain. and when u get it filled it doesn't feel good. they take this like gun needle thing after they swab ur mouth with this numbing stuff then they take the gun thing and inject a numbing medicing and the rest u can't feel they just drill a little to clean out the cavity then fill it with a self-hardening material but that's the simple dummed down way i told u if u want to know the technical way go to http://health.howstuffworks.com/cavity4.htm

You'll know you have a cavity when a tooth or your teeth are sensitive to cold, hot or something sweet. It will hurt, kind of a sharp pain. During a filling you will feel vibrations of grinding and poking. It doesn't hurt because you will be numb in that area. Its quick - 15 minutes. There are worse things that can be done to your teeth that do hurt.

Cavity = dental caries
Symptoms:
Toothache -- particularly after sweet, hot, or cold foods and drinks; Visible pits or holes in the teeth.
To get a filling, it feels like some one is digging in your teeth. But since dentists use anesthetics like novocaine (local) or nitrous oxide (laughing gas for people who hate injections), it is not painful.
You will see black spots like holes right at the start of the caries. Eventually the cavity deepens.
