hey girliee.. this is coming from a former cutter... i used to cut.. stopped about a month agoo... basically. ppl self harm for 3 reasons.. to feel real, attention, or some sort of abuse in their childhood(physical, sexual...). i personally did it because of my parents divorce, and some physical abuse in my child hood. keep in mind im only 13, so i was really young. luckily, my friends were and still are there for me.. i think if u were planning on self mutilating that u need to talk to a friend, sumone u can trust. if one of your friends are, then maybe u could let him/her know that you are there for them. dont tell them to stop, itll make it worse.. and no it doesnt really, in the longrun, realive anything.. although in the beginning it feels like it does, i have to go now, but email me, amg_news@yahoo.com

Self-mutilation is where people burn, cut, or otherwise hurt them self. They do it for any number of reasons. Mostly it's because they feel it gives them a sense of control over their lives. People who do this need to talk to someone and get some help. Contrary to what they think, it's not healthy, and does not help the situation.

ones own damage to their own body, cutting, slicing, overdosing etc.. it brings relief from stress. I cannot explain why but it brings a great sense of relief. Not so much the the cut the blood but the feeling that your mental pain is centered in around the cut and that you concentrate on that.. instant relief.. I don't recommend it, it really is not a great thing to do.

Many people self-mutilate themselves when they are depressed or have low self-esteem. Many say that things like cutting bring them relief to see their blood or something. Hopefully you're not considering anything, I would advise you not to

Want to see my pain? This is how much I hurt! That's what I've been told and asked by people I've talked to who do it. Lot of depression and other mental illnesses. It is one of the extreme forms of frustrated rage, self loathing, or things of that nature. A cry for help even when they push you away. Suicide in not a distant thought for everyone I talked to either. Bi-polar isn't great either, but you wouldn't know unless I told you.

Self-harm (SH) is deliberate injury to one's own body. This injury may be aimed at relieving otherwise unbearable emotions, sensations of unreality and numbness, or for other reasons. Self-harm is generally a social taboo. It is sometimes associated with mental illnesses such as Borderline Personality Disorder, with a history of trauma and abuse; and with mental traits such as perfectionism.

that's what wikipedia says and it's right the cutters do it to releif pain like if they were molested as children and stuff.

Self-mutilation is a general term for a variety of forms of intentional self-harm without the wish to die. Cutting one's skin with razors or knives is the most common pattern of self-mutilation. Others include biting, hitting, or bruising oneself; picking or pulling at skin or hair; burning oneself with lighted cigarettes, or amputating parts of the body.

self-mutilation is an outlet for strong negative emotions, especially anger or shame, that the person is afraid to express in words or discuss with others.

self-mutilation represents anger at someone else directed against the self.

self-mutilation relieves unbearable tension or anxiety Many self-mutilators do report feeling relief after an episode of self-cutting or other injury.

self-mutilation is a technique for triggering the body's biochemical responses to pain. Stress and trauma release endorphins, which are the body's natural pain-killing substances

self-mutilation is a way of stopping a dissociative episode. Dissociation is a process in which the mind splits off, or dissociates, certain memories and thoughts that are too painful to keep in conscious awareness. Some people report that they feel "numb" or "dead" when they dissociate, and self-injury allows them to feel "alive."

self-mutilation is a symbolic acting-out of the larger culture's mistreatment of women. This theory is sometimes offered to explain why the great majority (about 75%) of self-mutilators are girls and women

The symptoms of self-mutilation typically include wearing long-sleeved or baggy clothing, even in hot weather; and an unusual need for privacy. Self-mutilators are often hesitant to change their clothes or undress around others. In most cases the person has also shown signs of depression.

Some society-wide factors that influence self-mutilation, such as the high rate of sexual abuse of children and media stereotypes of women, are difficult to change. In general, however, young people who have learned to express themselves in words or through art and other creative activities are less likely to deal with painful feelings by injuring their bodies.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
A pattern of behavior characterized by impulsive acts, intense but chaotic relationships with others, identity problems, and emotional instability.

Dissociation
The splitting off of certain mental processes from conscious awareness.

Dissociative disorders
A group of mental disorders in which dissociation is a prominent symptom. Patients with dissociative disorders have a high rate of self-mutilation.

Endorphins
Pain-killing substances produced in the human body and released by stress or trauma. Some researchers think that people who mutilate themselves are trying to trigger the release of endorphins.

I used to hurt myself. In fact, it was just about 2 months ago, I created a big wound on my wrist.

I scrape/cut because I was firstly very mentally sick, secondly, very frustrated. And most greatly, in a lot of pain.

Many people do not understand what mental pain is like. It takes over the body, mind and soul.

Mental pain caused me to cut.

It's usually just cutting on their arms or legs. It's about trading emotional pain for physical pain but yes, it is done to find relief. I don't completely understand it but it's serious because the cutter is hurting deeply and needs help. If you know someone who is hurting themselves, please be a good friend. Don't judge but try to gently encourage them to seek counseling from someone who can help - minister, medical professional - anyone. Don't give up on them and pray.
