I just adopted a puppy from a local shelter, he's only like 6 weeks old and he's really shy and gloomy all the time, he wanders around the house, doesn't come when I call him, and even when I caress him and talk to him he seems distant... When I leave for uni (i'm only out for 3 hours or so) I leave him in the yard with his bed, food and toys and he cries for hours, even more when he hears someone else around. When he sees you he asks for you to pick him up, but then just fall asleep. What should I do to make him happy?

Hi, six weeks is young and they still need their litter mates. You need to socialize him. Take him all over-,walks, parks- as many places as you can. Do not pet or talk to him when he is acting shy as this is saying it is OK to act like this. Get him a crate as this is a "den" to the dogs. Think of wolves and how they are in the wild. He needs a safe place and ha falls asleep on you as this is a comfort for him. The dog whisperer, Ceaser Milan, is a great trainer of humans. Hope this helps!!!!!

SHOW him how. Get on the floor and play with his toy until he joins. Sit on the floor with a blanket or something soft and watch tv. If he is near, he'll be watching your every move. Other than that, give him time. He is young, and is in new surroundings. For so young, and being in a shelter, he's probably already been through a lot.

I agree with taking him to dog parks and also take him to stores that allow pets like petsmart, etc. but you need to give him all his vaccinations before you take him out anywhere. i wouldnt reccomend leaving him outside in such a big yard. get him a crate where he will feel safe, he is still a baby. also get an alarm clock and put it under a blanket so he can hear the ticking it acts like his mothers heart beat

A) Bring people over to your house. Let them play with the dog. This will get him/her to become used to lots of people.

B) Take your dog to a dog park/off-leash dog run. This will get her/him to socialize with other dogs.

C) Let him sleep with you in bed, if you can handle that.

he may need a companion animal or lots of toys. but the best thing is probably just to be patient and spend as much time with your pup as possible....relationships with animals are similar to relationships with other humans....time and patience is best.

For him to get more confidence you can play a tug of war game and let him win every time. I saw that on tv...

Take him to an obedience class. He will love the attention and it will make your relationship with him stronger, plus he will be well trained.
