When they are about 6 weeks old. Some start as early as 4 weeks, but they should have a set of teeth before starting.

I agree with Z-cat. You should try science diet-puppy. Its really healthy for the puppy. But he/she might not like it. If so you should hot water in it. My puppy loves it now.

3-4 weeks old. you can put 3 parts food with 1 part water...it will help with chewing and digestion.
