Download time depends on the size of the file, and the speed of the transmission. For example, if you go after big files using a dial-up connection it can take "forever".

Other possibilities:

The website you are downloading from might be very busy at times. A website server is just another computer. If lots of people try to download from it at the same time, the server can get overloaded and slow down.

Your computer might get congested if your hard drive is getting full or needs to be defragged. Or if you are trying to do multiple things at once. Or if you don't have enough RAM memory.

If you are on a dial-up connection, the phone network might have poor connections and noise on the line. This causes the server to send the same data over and over until a clean transmission happens.

What can you do?

. Make sure your own computer is ok
. Call your ISP and discuss problem
. Do your downloads at non-peak hours
. Upgrade the speed of your internet connection.
. Email the customer service of the website you are downloading

Sometimes wide area network problems are hard to find. Sorry there is no easy sure-fire solution.
