All of the planets, except for Earth, were named after Greek and Roman gods and godesses. The name Earth is an English/German name which simply means the ground. It comes from the Old English words 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'. In German it is 'erde'. The name Earth is at least 1000 years old.

Earth means dirt. We walk around on a seeming ball of dirt. It's like asking what is the name of our species. The answer, human, means people. The latin word for our plant is Terra. Terra means dirt.
Here's a question back at you. What is the name of your house? I'll bet that for most people, they simply refer to is as their house.

No single person did; it is an old Germanic word "ertho" and does not mean "dirt", but "field"; other languages have different words, such as "terra".
