If a man and a woman have a son the go their seperate ways and each of them has another child of course they should be all consider brothers don't listen to these ones who tell you step brothers they should be treated like brothers don't try to make them into something else make sure that each boy knows he has another brother but also make sure he knows that they are not related by blood but by the common brother they share.

By their names.

They call each other brother. They are half brothers if you both had the other son with another person. If the other son already came with the new spouse (or partner), then the boys are step brothers. Either way they should still call each other brother.

Why not simply let them call each other "brother," and explain the technicalities when they are older?

It is the quality of the relationship, not the actual blood relationship that makes the difference.

I would try to raise them all to be close to one another, and to think of each other as brothers.

They are neither half-brothers nor step-brothers. They don't share a parent. They may consider themselves "related" through their common half-brother, if they are carefully raised and everyone gets along. How about "near-brothers"?

I think they would be considered step-brothers - but usually only when marriage was involved. But I think in today's day and age using the "step" description is completely fitting.

how 'bout this... there's this chick i knew in high school who divorced one guy, then married his brother. there was one child from the first coupling and twins from the second (hers). he went off and had another child and she broke it off with his brother to marry a third guy. we're now talking 5 kids with cousin-brothers, uncle-dads and aunt-moms...

you need a dry erase board and different colored markers to figure the whole thing out... good news is that they're all friendly and rely on each other for babysitting now and then.

eek.

Nothing if the parents aren't together. if they are then they are step brothers, but could call each other brother.
