In Great Britain, a pie with some kind of meat in it, served with "chips" (what we would call fries), is a common meal.

And who doesn't want a free meal?

The other answers are correct but missing one vital element, these items - Pie & Chips are obtained in a chip shop, this is basically a "fast food" establishment that serves fish and chips, pie and chips, chicken and chips, mushy peas and chips, sausage and chips, or just chips.
Fish and chips is a very popular meal in England though its hey day was in the 70's, it saw a resurgence with the first "branded" chip shops - Harry Ramsdens in the 90's.
The GEICO gecko is from the South East of England, probably Essex and this being an area on the Thames Estuary seafood is a popular dish, so going to the "chippy" is a regular occurance, but what do those people who dont like fish eat - Pie & chips of course.

pie and chips is a "meal" to the british population
"pie and chips" is exactly what it says. Usually meat with something, ie, steak & kidney, steak & potato, chicken & mushroom, chicken & ham or other combination enrobed in a pastry (usually shortcrust but sometimes puff pastry) case. Served with potato chips - which can either be oven baked or deep fried.
