Actually, I had questions similiar to yours last year with my son, who is now 1. His doctor advised to start with cereal 1X daily to 5 months, then add one meal (lunch or dinner) each month untill he was eating regularly. Remember that these little guys don't have very big tummies, so it may be only half a jar a day for now. Also remember to give them only breast milk, formula, or water until 6-7 months, when it is okay to add a little diluted juice to their diet. After giving juice, be sure to offer a few sips of water to wash the sugars off his little teeth so he doesn't develop tooth decay. Also, I was encouraged when my son was at this age to add daily multi vitamin drops for infants, which you can buy at your local super market. Just be sure to speak with his doctor first before you make any sudden changes. If the doctor is very busy, it may be easier to ask for his nurse to return your call. Good Luck!

My son is the same age, He will be 5 months on July 7th. Now every baby is different but my son is already eating cereal and a whole lot of jar food. We give my son jarred food and cereal for his last feeding and i usually go by if he wants more or not. If I were you though I wouldn't start with the sweet food first, I made that mistake with my son and now he refuses to eat vegtables. My son's new doctor told me that it should be vegtables, then add the fruit and then at 6 months they can finally digest meats. I would talk to your son's doctor. But it is perfectly fine to be feeding him jarred food every day.

You know, with my first child, I played by all of the "new mommy rules" - I gave him each food as the books told me to.

With my other 3, I kind of catered to each of their individual needs. Some children are perfectly content w/ just getting a bottle or nursing until they are 6 months old - I don't think my youngest daughter would have ever eaten real food if I wouldn't have forced her to -

If your infant is happier and more content by feeding him solids, it is not going to hurt him to go ahead and start him on jarred foods..... However, you really should start him on vegetables first - and only give him one vege / fruit at a time - don't mix and match, because if he has an allergic reaction to any one of them, you won't know which one it was if you are giving him more than 1 new food at a time.

You can give him baby food 3x a week. Just make sure he is still getting the required amount of breast milk or formula along with it. Babies get all of there nutrients from milk until they are 1. I started giving my son a little bit of baby food at that age and he is healthy.

As long as your lovely son is enjoying what he is eating, you are in good shape. Now that you've have introduced him to something similar to "real food" you can forget putting that horse back in the barn - he is ready - Freddy! (smile) I would be careful introducing more than one item per week or two - just to ensure that no allergies are observed. AND of course, talk to your ped to make sure you don't overfeed - and have him too big too quickly. I know you're loving this experience. Enjoy!

At five months? What does your pediatrician say? Generally formula or breast milk for one year.
