They hate it. Next time you see me and a Marine in a restaurant, pay for my meal instead. :)

I have a good friend who joined the Marines last year, and he says that people pay for his food (sometimes his friends' and families' too) and offer to buy him drinks all the time. He doesn't mind at all!

I think its a great little way for us civilians to show men in the armed forces how much we appreciate what they're doing.

My husband's in the Army and I find it weird when strangers come up and thank him. I know a lot of soldiers who feel resentful about that, because many of them feel that the war in Iraq is nothing to be thanked for, and doesn't really affect all these folks back home who are thanking them for it.

That said, my husband flashes that military ID and checks for a discount everywhere we go.

And by the way, doing such good deeds anonymously is a very classy way to go.

Would you find it annoying? What's the going pay rate for a soldier or sailor in the U.S. Armed Forces. Not much.

Doing something like that would be a grand gesture. Were I the Marine in question, I'd feel that at least someone appreciated me doing my duty.
