Only if they don't smell.
During the 1980s a lot of homeless proplr spent the nights in the World Trade Center. Many were people who had been let out of mental institutions (thanks to Reagan's cost cutting). They didn't know how to care for themselves.
I lived across the street -- so would pass through the WTC lobby on my way home. The stench was unbearable.
It wasn't rude of me to hold my breath -- it was a necessity.

Who cares if its rude? Its your breath. Is it rude to hold your breath when you walk buy someone smoking if you dont like smoke? It stinks and homeless people stink! Most homeless people are rude when you tell them no when they ask for money. So I say hold you breath!!!

I wouldn't make a big show of it, THAT would be rude, but you can't help it if there's a smell that bothers you and you want to protect yourself from that. It's kinda like when I'm driving through a "bad" area of town and I pull up to a stoplight and a questionable looking character is walking by...I don't make it really obvious when I lock all the doors because I don't want to hurt their feelings, and chances are they're perfectly nice people and don't pose any threat at all. We all fear unfamiliar people/surroundings, I guess.

Only if there is no reason for it. If somebody stinks, homeless or not, you avoid breathing so why should they get special treatment. However, if there is no reason and you simply don't want to share their air...then yes, its rude.

Like, are you making a big scene in front of them that you're holding your breath?
Besides, who cares if they know?
What are they gonna do to you?
Keep your head high and be happy you
have soap at home.
Jeez, be happy you have a home. : )
