Nope. They are among dozens of less common varieties not usually found in grocery stores because until recently they were not grown commercially. Also look for the yellow "Yukon Gold" potatoes which taste very good.

No, our planet has lots of rare interesting plants that grow in a variety of colors. One color was picked long ago that people liked the most and thats what corporate farms grow. The other varieties risk extinction unless something is done to help cultivate them.

I'm sure they could be, but there are purple potatoes that are not modified, if that is what you're asking.

No. I beleive they they are a combination of white and red potatos.

I havent thought about that yet, but I noticed they are much cheaper than the regular yellow ones.
