We have quite alot of homeless people in our area. I've even gone as far as renting a couple a hotel for 2 nights. My recommendation is to give them food and personal hygiene items. When ever I have left over food at dinner(at least once a week) I make plates of food and give them away. Most of them are very grateful to get a hot meal. I also occasionally make bags from my local 99 cent store with deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, chap stick, etc. At least you know your money and time is going to a good cause. Unfortunately when you give out money it ends up getting spent on beer & cigs

You can always go buy them a loaf of bread, some peanut butter, (not lunchmeat because it will spoil if not refrigerated), a couple apples or oranges, some carrots or celery, and some bottled water. This is what I do.
Or you can also take a chance and invited them to lunch in the nearest resteraunt. You might be surprised by what you learn about them. When I live in San Diego I ended up striking up a friendship with a homeless woman after taking her to lunch one day. Turns out she had an amazing story to tell. After that first day, I took her out to lunch several times a week from then on. I was the one who's life was made better by knowing her!

Sad to say, no matter what we do for the vast majority of homeless, nothing will work. You see, it will take effort on the part of the homeless. Most have given up on the effort thing, so therefore they will only accept handouts. Some of them actually make a LOT of money. You can't change a zebra's stripes.....

If you are truly in doubt how your money would be spent, you can purchase gift cards at most fast food restaurants. Carry them along with you for when you run into the situation of running into a homeless person. Although, I did like the idea of a loaf of bread and peanut butter.

Donate money to organizations in your community that help the homeless. That way you'll know that the money is going to people who really need it.
If you'd like to give them something, you can buy gift certificates to a fast-food chain and give those out. Those can only be spent on food.

You can also collect used or new gloves, scarves, hats, coats and blankets during the winter months. Get your friends to pitch in their old items. Anyone truly homeless and in need will appreciate the gesture since most shelters will not let them hang around during the day.

By purchasing them a good meal. Perhaps some soup and a burger with a large Coke and a candy bar. That would make them very very happy.
