you have to make sure that your cake is COMPLETELY cooled before you try to frost it. once it is, apply a very thin layer of icing, called a crumb layer, before applying the rest of your frosting. this way your final frosting won't have crumbs in it and will be picture perfect! i had problems with this in the past because i never let my cake cool, and one time when i tried to make a layered cake my top layer slid off during the cake's transport to my mom's house. good luck with your cake!

Get a Lazy Susan, then put a pot on it upside down. Using the Lazy Susan to turn it, apply the frosting with a spatuala.

another thing could cause it for not sticking right is that your cake is still to warm it makes it slide off ....make sure you cool your cake then frost it

Mix a few tablespoons of Elmers glue into the frosting and it will stick fine.

Did you wait for the cake to completely cool?

If so, then your icing might be a bit to thin or your cake might be a bit too moist.

Make sure the cake is cooled off and if it is icing made from scratch, make sure it has a thick consistancy.

Is the cake still warm? That might be the reason. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

How warm is the cake? did you let it completely cool? I would try putting it in the freezer to harden a little then try again.

Hmmm... If the icing is cold then you could warm it up a bit to help it stick.
