As others are saying, a cat requires much less effort. A dog not only needs more attention to be happy, but also takes away a lot of spontaneity to your life. If you tend to like to go on spontaneous weekend trips, etc, go for a cat. With a cat, you can just leave plenty of food, water and a litter box and you can be gone all weekend. With a dog, you have to pay to board it somewhere or get a pet-sitter (at about $15 per visit, at least twice a day) to come to your home.
BTW...just FYI, I have dogs AND cats. But when I was still young and active, I stuck to cats.
Lastly, even though you didn't ask this, I would encourage you to adopt whichever animal you choose from a shelter rather than "buying" one (unless you plan to enter them in dog or cat shows and need a purebreed.) Shelter animals are SO grateful and loving. And generally actually LESS likely to be diseased than a pet you might buy at a pet store.

I would get a cat. A dog is alot of work for someone who doesn't know how to take care of one. I had cats all my life and then went to get a dog for my son...., well it didn't work out very well!! The more time you spend with a cat, the friendlier it will be as long as the people who had it before you were really friendly to it. If you do decide to get a dog, I would get some books about them and read up on how to take care of them. I now have a dog, but it took alot of reading up on the subject before I knew what I was doing.

Both dogs & cats require attention from their humans. Cats a little less so because of the independent nature. Maybe an older dog or cat would be easier for you. Having worked at an animal shelter, I urge you to look there first. First, you'll meet some great pets;2, you'll be saving a life. How cool is THAT?

Well I had both and both have good and strong points. With a cat it basically less work there independent creatures. With the dog there loyal and they rely in you you also get a lot more affection with a cat. As with a cat there not that friendly. I had no idea how much work was involved with having a dog. I have a golden retriever and I have to walk it at least twice a day.

It would depend on your lifestyle and where you live. Is the animal going to be inside or out? Are you away from home for long periods? My first animal is a dog. When I bought my first home, I went to an animal shelter and fell in love with a gorgeous little thing. I am home most of the day and she stays inside, even though I have a big back yard, a doggy door in the back door allows her to go out when every she wishes.
There is a lot to consider before buying an animal, but it is worth looking around at the animal shelters, you could give a home to a would be doomed pet. Good luck with it all.

Cats are good first pets. They learn litter box training pretty quickly and can be VERY affectionate. But if you want a pet that you can be very active with you should get a big dog. Cats can play but prefer cuddling.

Just like everyone says... what are going to have time for? However cats have different personalites... I have four and they are all needy and follow me around and have to be with me every second of the day like a dog. So getting a cat is less maintance but they give me all the love like a dog would.

chessapeke's answer is good. It does depend on what you are looking for in a pet. Dogs will give you their love and devotion with very little effort on your part. Cats own you (you don't own them) and don't give their love to just anyone. It's an honor when they choose to love you. That's why I enjoy cats more than dogs.

Depends on what you like more. Cats require less time and less attention, they are kind of loners, except when they are kittens and then they want all of your time. Dogs require a lot more time and training, but you can take them places and play games. So you kind of have to decide which one will fit your schedule better. You don't want to get a dog and never be home.
