Because they can't seem to wrap their minds around the fact that this is all that life is. It gives them comfort to think that this is just a small part of life and that there is something waiting for them on the other side.

You could also ask why some people believe the earth is only 10,000 years old when we have scientific proof it's in the millions. Religion and spirituality is something people have a personal relationship with. Most people are content to accept the fact that other peoples opinions are going to differ from their own but others feel the need to force those opinions on others. I believe as many others do that reincarnation exists and my body here on this life is merely a vessel for my eternal soul.

Spirit is energy, and energy cannot be destroyed (scientific fact). The weight of spirit has been measured upon death by scientists- a dead body weighs less than the previously alive one. Is that quack science? Then surely there are quacks all over the world finding the same results. If you want to believe that there is nothing after death, you CAN- that is why we have free will. A person does not have to be religious to believe there is a world for our spirits after death.

I believe (if not mistaken) Science says energy does not die. The brain contains energy and the body has an energy that surrounds it. It is not just a mass of dead flesh walking around in a vegetative state.
We are energy - call it the soul or spirit - it exists and each soul (or spirit) will account for his or her life during their existence. Hey, dont like it? Changing the "written" rules of science wont change reality.

Fear, superstition, religious conditioning etc.
Pascal had a "bet" regarding the afterlife and God in general. Here it goes:
If I belive and God exists, and I follow his rules, then I'll get my reward in heaven and I win.
If I believe and follow his rules, but God does not exist, at least I'll lead a happy productive life and I still win (my loss is neglijable).
If I don't believe and God doesn't exist, then I gain something neglijable (beign right that God doesn't exist).
If I don't believe and God indeed does exist, then I lose, because I'll go to hell.
This si a better explanation for wether or not to believe in God, but I guess it could be applied just to the afterlife, irrelevant of God's existance or not.

Your soul is only bound to your body when you are alive. That's how people have near death experiences. Their souls leave there body and them come back. Life in the body is only a short part of the life of the soul. Souls never die.

isn't it nice to think that our body is just a cacoon for our souls to develop in? that when we die we'r actually evolving into a better form that is quite possibly immortal? kinda of a nice emotional pillow to sleep on.. the thought that we really never have to face death cuz in some form we are immortal.. what it all comes down to is wither how u want to percive ur death.. as an end,, or a new beginning.

Because energy does not cease to exist. It only changes form. If that is true, then that means the soul/energy just changes to another form. I've had way too many "other side" experiences to believe that you just stop being.
Everyone needs to make their own decision-but mine is made. I talk to my brother and other "crossed over " friends all the time.

Because it does. Try Astral Projection and you will meet people who have crossed over as you travel through dimensions or play with an Ouija board and talk to them.
Just be careful - some aren't nice, at all.

Perhaps that's what they need to believe, to give their earthly life meaning. To believe that death is not final.
There's a school of thought that says that if believing in an afterlife makes you a happier and nicer person in this life, then go with it.

Yearning for immortality is hard-wired into our brain as the survival instinct. We all want to live forever. But that is no proof that there is an everlasting life.
