I had two dogs, a poodle and a sheltie. Our sheltie died. I want another dog so our poodle will have another dog to play with. But my mom said it has to be pretty small and it can't shed and it can't be mean because we have three kids.

All dogs shed.....expect maybe for a Mexican Hairless or an American Hairless Terrier.

Shedding is a natural loss of hair in dogs that allows the new coat to come in. All dogs shed; some more then others. There is no such thing as a non-shedding dog however shedding varies from breed to breed.

Yes, ALL dogs shed, even Yorkies. They have hair which is the closest to human hair there is. Humans shed, check your shower drain if you don't believe it. I think I would chose another poodle for several reasons. Poodles, for the most part are good natured house dogs and two dogs of the same breed will be more likely to get along with each other. If you get a puppy, it will get along with kids as long as the kids know how to treat it and don't make it mean.

most of the terrier group dont shed...whats wrong with another poodle ? if you want something in the 20 -30 # range there is the soft coated wheatin. Google dogs that dont shed...there are 11 different breeds that have hair and not fur...even a poodle sheds a little....just like us. look at some of the terriers...you cant go worng with them, good temperment easy to care for...good luck...your poodle most likely is walking around the house very sad...this is normal. When you get the new pup DO NOT BRING IT IN THE HOUSE!!! let them both meet away from your house...let them meet and sniff at a park. if your poodle gets a little mean its ok, He just wants to be the alpha dog. Any more questions e-mail me...i will be glad to help thepuppyguy@yahoo.com

Poodles have hair and not fur, and so will not shed. Most poodle mixes, therefore, will have the same advantage.

As for being mean, that's a training issue. Once you get the dog, NEVER let it growl/bite/snap at the kids. If it ever tries to do so, stop it immediately. "Mean" behavior in a dog is its way of showing dominance. You need to let it know that all of the people in the house are above it in the pack order.

A Bichon Frise does not shed. They weigh between 12-20 pounds, and most of them are good with children.

Contrary to a couple of answers, the three dogs that DO NOT shed are: Poodle, Bichon, and Portugeuse Water Dog. These three breeds have "hair" instead of fur, and are suitable for people with allergies. All other breeds either have fur or a combination of hair on top with a fur undercoat (like a Yorkie), and the fur undercoat will shed. I have both a PWD and a Bichon, since I am very allergice to anything with fur, and neither one sheds or bothers my allergies. Good luck!

You would most probably need to get a TOY POODLE not a miniature or teacup;large poodle, I have one like that and he doesn't shed one hair, and it is large enough to see. I hope this suggestion works for you.

Just keep in mind that short haired dogs shed more than long haired dogs.

from what I understand about shedding is it is a dog having an unbalanced diet. It does not matter what type of dog it is.
