I am an avid Chicago Cubs fan. I grew up loving the Cubs, and I will love the Cubs until the day I die. Now at my work we are not allowed to wear hats. But everyday I noticed that a certain group of people were wearing some sort of a religious turban. This is apparently an ok thing since it is religious based. Now I am in no way descriminating these people. A lot of them are my friends, however my question comes again. What defines religion. So about a week later I decided to wear my favorite Cubs hat. You can probably guess it, I got in trouble. In a recent question posted by dantherandommanapple, some answers to the same question I ask were as follows. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion. Does the fact that I am a Cubs fan count as a religion? I watch nearly every Cubs game with "zeal" and "conscientious devotion."

Perhaps. But the government only recognizes so many religions. Otherwise people might start doing terrible things in their religion's name... oops, wait... bit late for that. Really, though, unless the government decides to recognize cubianity as a legitimate religion you don't have a leg to stand on. If they did you might be able to get away with it.

Well, if you believe the Cubs are a Supernatural/Higher Power and you worship them, tithe to them (not purchase items... but just donate time or money)...
Religion in the dictionary is a belief in a higher power... a system of beliefs pertaining to the Supernatural... So, unless you're kneeling before an altar with a picture of all the Cubs, a baseball, a bat and a few other memorabilia, I'd say you're just a huge Sports fan.

One could say you follow the Cubs "religiously". So in theory you could become the founder of Cubsism. However, I wouldn't put all my eternal hopes on them. But would it fly as discrimination? Probably not, unless you have written documentation & had standing as an officially recognized religion. You'd probably end up with a Cardinals fan as the judge of your case.

Certainly you could deem the Chicago Cubs as a polytheistic religion. Just tell them you actively worship each player.

If you believe the Cubs are your God, then you should be able to wear their gear. If you think they are God, thats sad and empty. I suggest a trip to a library or bookstore and choose a more fulfilling belief.
