I am taking English 101 in college. My term paper topic is the "Da Vinci Code". My subject is: Did Jesus marry Mary Magdalene?

I know he never got married, that he is a divine being, and that he is the son of God, but I need help disproving the "Da Vinci Code." Does anyone know of any scholars, books, articles, people, web pages or ANYTHING that will assist me with my paper???

it's due July 17.

Josh McDowell put together a short book entitled, "The DaVinci Code: A Quest for Answers."

Brown's book will be easy to disprove. His research is awful, his conclusions are just plain wrong most of the time, his grasp of history is simply terrible, and he makes things up... remember... this is a fictional novel.
Best of luck to you!

How about from the author of the book himself.

This is from his website the first link:

"HOW MUCH OF THIS NOVEL IS TRUE?
The Da Vinci Code is a novel and therefore a work of fiction. While the book's characters and their actions are obviously not real, the artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals depicted in this novel all exist (for example, Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings, the Gnostic Gospels, Hieros Gamos, etc.). These real elements are interpreted and debated by fictional characters. While it is my belief that some of the theories discussed by these characters may have merit, each individual reader must explore these characters' viewpoints and come to his or her own interpretations. My hope in writing this novel was that the story would serve as a catalyst and a springboard for people to discuss the important topics of faith, religion, and history. "

And for arguments against, go to the second website:

Search it out on the Net and you'll find that even the author of the book, and the producers of the movie, have admitted that it's a work of fiction.

I would also question the approach of your instructor. Why is he/she requiring you to, in effect, prove a negative? Why are you being required to prove that something DIDN'T happen?

Is this a state or community college? If so, why is Jesus' celibacy -- which is a religious issue -- even being brought up in an English class?

Your assignment seems much more suited for a religion or theology class.

If your college is state or community, I have a hunch that your instructor is subtlely pushing an idea on you and the other students that challenges Christianity.

That's not the place of an English instructor. I would politely ask him/her why you're being asked to delve into religious affairs for an English class, and not being asked to simply evaluate "DaVinci" as a literary work.

Firstly, Dan Brown did not come up with this theory, it's been around for eons.
Second, as so many have pointed out, it is fiction.
Thirdly, no historian of the time ever says that jesus of Nazareth married, and as he was such a contraversial figure they probably would have mentioned it.
Finally, it's impossible to prove or disprove because everyone involved has been dead for centuries.

I'm not sure you will be able to find the reference material that you're looking for. May I suggest a new topic for your paper. Why don't you write it on whether or not it truly matters if Jesus was married and had a child. Does it change anything or his message?

Fictional book.

however; it did bring out some interesting topics. My recommendation is to first study Jewish tradition and you will find out that the "water into wine" miracle could have been at his wedding... Once you understand the traditions of the times, look at what a Father's responsibility to their son is.

Then study some history of that time and get acclimated to how things happened. then re-study the bible and see what you find

It's mythology. It changes depending on the time. When was the last time a witch was burned at the stake or pressed to death?
Don't confuse myth with reality, it only make you look silly.

I didn't know works of fiction had to be disproved. Why didn't you go with Harry Potter?
