She doesn't have papers, and when i recieved her from her past owner he estemated her age at 4 months. Upon her Vet appt. she told me the puppy, 1. still haveing her puppy teeth, 2. not having her adult hair, 3. ears not standing straight up, that she guessed her age at closer to 12 weeks!!! It is a possibility that she could be a mix breed, but her dominant features are definitely GSD. In what time frame will major changes start occoring?

Ears standing up has nothing to do with age....some german sheppards have pointy ears....some flop...some have 1 pointy and 1 flop ear. If you dont have papers its not going to be a pure breed,BUT this does not mean its a bad dog. I ran a puppy shop for many years. If you wanted to show the dog, getting one w/out papers you wont have a chance. Mutts make great pets, They have a better temper (most do) unless there is inbreeding. Doggie school might be a good idea. Good luck and love your dog....he already loves you ;-)

it is possible the dog could be mixed or the parents could be mixed..But the Vet would recognize this and inform you. The puppy would start having changes in features between now and six months..some shepard's have to have their ears trained to stand (much like a pincher). You can ask you vet of the proper way to do this because I think some methods are barbaric. Either way you will know what you have as the dog gets larger, and don't forget there is more than one type of German Shepard.

I am sure it is possible that she is a mixed breed but if she still has her puppy teeth and the Vet says she is 12 weeks I would believe her. The teeth is how they determine the age of most animals. In the next month or 2 her ears should start to stand straight up, usually one at a time, they should look big for her head (we always called this stage the bat ears stage), Make sure you have alot thing for her to chew because she should start losing her puppy teeth in the next month and they chew alot then. My shepards always changed their coats at 6 months and looking back a puppy pictures they really changed alot.

if she is a German shepherd, the ears come up fully at about 5-7 months. At about the same time their body begins to grow at a great rate and they start to look leggy and out of proportion. this is the major growing age and they need lots of good food, including bonemeal, to supplement their growing bones. Because of their growth rate they can get temporary cartilage problems and sometimes develop a limp, but this will pass and the limp will go away. At about 10 months she will begin to test you with her determination and strength, it is important at this time to be consistent and keep your dog in check, this is when they can become a problem, if allowed to. This will pass...... Your dog will begin to body up at about 18-24months, its chest will grow and deepen and its head will begin to look more in proportion with its body, which previously has looked too lean for its height. They are wonderful dogs....make sure you train and socilise it properly. My children learns to walk by clinging on to my German Shepherd when they walked by. They are gentle and loving dogs. Good luck and enjoy your shepherd!!

If her ears have been played with too much then they will not stand up. Sometimes it only happens to one and not the other.
