You should ice your thumb up to 4 hours of the injury and take aspririn or ibprophren for the pain and as an anti-inflammotory. If it is unusually bruised, red, or swollen after 1-2 hours after the injury, I would go to the doctor or ER to get it XRayed (because you could've broken it and didn't know it.) Definitely go if it looks crooked or bent, or if you are in extreme pain. When you jammed it, did it go past how the bone would usually move? How much pressure was on it, and was that enough to break it? If 2-3 days pass, and you aren't in any pain, and it's looks normal, then you are ok.

If it's swollen I would definitely go to the ER to get it checked out. They will probably give you one of those things that goes over the finger. Other wise take Advil it reduces the swelling and pain.
