To switch off from work stress, or when your head is buzzing with thoughts about a particular problem, and you just want to switch off.
Lay down on your right hand side, and get your self really comfortable, loosen tight clothing, etc. kick off your shoes, and relax. Focus your attention on your breathing, and inhale deeply and slowly, filling your lungs from your diaphragm upwards, hold for a couple of seconds, then exhale slowly, continue to breathe like this for a couple of minutes, or until it becomes uncomfortable for you, let your breathing return to normal, lay resting quietly or listening to some relaxing music if you wish, for about 10 Min's.
You have just used," Newtons law of gravity", to change your brain dominance, the left hemisphere should now be less dominant and you should have slowed or stopped thinking about what was stressing you out. Also your right brain hemisphere should have received a nice healthy dose of oxygen rich blood, which in turn will activate the more creative side of you, you may even find that your mind is clearer and that you can think of more solutions to life's stresses.

I start out every weekend with a 2-4 hour hike in the hills. During the work week, I take the stairs instead of elevator at work. Exercise helps me to relax and reduce stress.

Running on the tredmill really helps. I know most people sit and try to relax in the form that we're most used like laying on a pillow or meditating. But for me a good run on the tredmill, no specific time, will meake me clear my head, and then it gets me tired enough to relax and unwind.

Do some intense aerobic exercise like running, walking fast or working out on an elliptical trainer.
Afterwards your body should be able to relax.

Without a doubt, exercise. Pick your favorite exercise and, even if you have to force yourself, do it. Sometimes the best workouts are when your dead tired. Warm baths and a glass of red wine work too.
