You prove to her that you are responsible using the other areas of the internet. Perhaps you could tell her that she can sit with you while you use it for the first few times. Then offer perhaps a time limit -- only 1/2 and hour of IM-ing a day.
If she has a job where she works on a computer, perhaps she could get it at work and you two could stay in touch that way.
Are any of your friends parents friends with your mom? If so, ask if they are on AOLIM. Then your mom can use it to talk to her friends too.
However, I will say that your mom is right to be cautious of using it. There are untold predators online. She may also be worried that you'll spend too much time on it. Good luck!

I'm sorry, but I must agree with your Mom. While you may just be using AOL Instant Messenger to talk with friends, there is always a chance that someone else will "cut in" and try to speak with you.
Instead of using Messenger, please either use e-mail and/or the telephone. This way you are definitely sure who you are communicating with.
Have a lovely rest of the day.

My daughter's have this same problem. You probably won't convince her unless a friends mother, that she really trusts, talks to her. That is the ONLY way I change my mind about things like that. My daughter's are not allowed on My Space or Everyone's Connected. They are 2 out of 120 young people in our church that are NOT on those sites and I don't care. They will be 2 that survive.

Tell her that you will only chat with your friends and not with anyone that you don't know. If anyone that you don't know talks to you, you will ignore them. And the most important thing is that you promise you mother that you will not give any personal information to someone through the internet and you will not have a secret relationship with a man or woman through the internet.

Well my opinion is that you should show her what it is? Try explain again why it is safe. If she does not listen make one of your older relative tell her it is safe and that there is nothing to worry about.

your mom is right - what a trashy place to be - they even let people like myself use it.
but just as a thought you can try a temper tantrum, or telling her that you are going to hold your breathe until you turn blue inthe face if she does not let you have your way.
