That is really hard to say, one never knows if the filling is going to last it might break off. Make sure this is not temporary filling material, otherwise known as cavit. Its not very strong. I know crowns are expensive but would actually strongly recommend getting one. I know your dentist is concerned because the tooth is still hurting???? Quite frankly if a rootcanal was done and completed the tooth should not be hurting you, but if the rootcanal is fairly new yes discomfort is normal. If you've had this rootcanal completed long ago you might need the rootcanal to be retreated. Perhaps it was not completed all the way...Nevertheless I recommend to get the crown done...let the doctor put your permanent crown on with temporary cement, have you come back in a month for post op, and if the pain or discomfort has subsided to cement it permanently.

There is no way for your dentist to tell you how long anything will last. But if your tooth fractures before you put a crown on it you will most likely have to have the tooth extracted. Then you have lost all the money you spent on the root canal. My advice, Do the crown as soon as you can. Try not to put it off to long. You may regret taking the cheaper route.

It might last forever, it might break
I don't have a crown and the filling have survived for 4 years and counting. If you trust your dentist and that he will do a good filling that won't break, than just go with the filling.
Plus, why pay the full price of a crown now? Wait it until it breaks, which might never happen, and then pay the crown price

You should have asked the dentist. When I got my root canal filled they gave me a temporary cap and filling and said it would last x amount of time at the most, but I don't remember how long it was. A few months I think, but people at the dentist would know for sure.

ok, it just happened to me, i got the root canal, got a temp filling, went to reg dentist 4 wks later, told him could not afford the porcelin crown, he gave me a post and filled it with composite. it looks gorgeous and it does not let your tooth break. I heard can keep for a year. good luck, the damn teeth are so expensive, they wanted 450.00 for the crown with my insurance. 50% coverage.
PS if you had a root canal, your tooth should not hurt they take out the nerves, go back.

the 'filling' you are talking about ,thats temporary after a root canal (its not an actual filling like for a cavity), you'll have to get the crown eventually the temporary thing won't last.
