2,3,4,5 = -1 6,7,8,9=0 10,J,Q,K,A= +1 you want to bet big on a deck which has a high negative count. Bet low when its neutral or in the +. The casino watches for this and will kick you out if they catch you counting. There was a good documentary on Cable about some MIT students who pulled this off for years and didn't get caught. You should definitely watch this if at all possible. It will give you an idea of what you are in for.

The system described above is called high/low. It is a "first level" counting system. There are certainly better systems out there, including the Omega II, which is "second leve," I believe. Going to 3 or 4 levels gives you diminishing returns for an exceedingly complex system. What you really need to do is check out a book called Blackjack for Blood. I used to live in Vegas, and I used the high/low method until I found that book. This book explains the Omega II system, which is quite complicated. You might learn the system and then decide it's too difficult and not much fun.

The first thing you need to do though is learn basic strategy. You can find that in any good blackjack book. You MUST memorize basic strategy and be able to recall it perfectly.

The other thing is you must understand WHY counting cards works so you know which tables to play. If there are 8 decks in the shoe, counting cards is pretty pointless. Likewise, if the table you're playing does NOT pay 3:2 on blackjacks, then a good DEAL of your card-counting vigorish is gone (no pun intended).
