Boxing is not doing as well for 3 reasons.

1. Heavyweight division is very poor for the last 10 years.

2. Television coverage is not as accessibe as before. boxing used to be on regular television and did not cost $60 for a pay perview that may not be good.

3. Athletes are getting more fame and glory from other sports. The Heavyweight chapion of the world used to be the #1 recognized world athlete. Now soccer and basketbal players get more money and world wide fame and dont get their a$$ kicked in!

Oscar De La hoya as a promoter may be the answer to changing boxing.

1) There are way too many divisions in professional boxing, separated by a handful of pounds in each weight class. Boxers have to weigh in well before the fight to be allowed to box, but can later add to their weight just before the match.

2) There are only a couple of boxers who the general public know about, and most of those boxers are retired or have passed on. The few still boxing today may not garner the attention that past champions easily relished.

3) Promoters are draining more money from the game than a leech can suck blood.

4) There are rigged fights still to this day. For example, as close as it was, Winky Wright had Jermain Taylor beat and the judges call it a draw. I have seen other bouts where one boxer outright destroys the other, yet the recipient of the beating wins the match.

Many other examples and reasons persist to this day, corroding boxing and alienating their fans. Sadly, I don't know what can turn boxing's downward spiral around.

All of these answers are good. I think it is a lack of integrity in the sport as a whole. Far too many titles where the fighters ranked between 5th and 30th best in the world are called the "world champion" by one organisation and no regular contests between these different organisations to find the one true champion. Too many boxers have died in the sport which is a terrible thing and that has been a result of little or no care by their managers and trainers which is bad for everyone, not just for the fighters but also for the sport as a whole. Also too many boxers have involvement in crime so they may be good boxers but they are not good people so they are not the right role models to make the sport more popular. With the emergence and increase in popularity of mixed martial arts where a fighter is required to learn more than just boxing is another factor and most of the mixed martial arts fighters are better role models then a lot of boxers.

because the golden age of boxing is gone. money is the over riding factor. guys dont get in to the ring to find out who is the baddest dude in the world. they only get in if the paycheck is big enough. there are a few exceptions out there, but until the you get more champions like ,haggler ,hearns ,sugar ray ,pryor, frasier ,or ali, you will not see the great fights we all what. i am hoping guy like lacy and taylor will bring the sport around. politics in the so called governing bodies in the sport have every bit of reason for the decline as dose the lack of unwilling fighters. when the sport is unified under one commisioning body and all the other governing bodies a made worthless and the corruption is take out then you will see worth while fight where the fighters recordes and health will determine the fights.
lets all hope that senator mccain in az can get the legistation past to help boxing become a sport more controlable like baseball or basketball. (not saying that they are perfect but atlest there are so rules and regulations)

Because we dont have a lot of polorizing superstars. Back then Ali was very polorizing and so was Mike Tyson. It captures not only hardcore fans but casual fans. In order for a sports to be popular, they need to capture the Casual Fans. We all know the boxing lovers will always love to watch boxing no matter what. But as for me, I am not into boxing but I watched Tyson fought every match during the 80;s and early 90;s because he was so polorizing. Now the heavy weight division suck and the middle weight division have a bunch of moteocre fighters. UFC pretty much get rid of boxing as a whole in terms of fighting style sports.

Yeah people like Don King. My views are that there are too many titles these days for each division.

I also feel that Sky control the coverage of fights with their additional pay per view on top of the sports subscription and this reduces coverage from the masses to those who either can afford it or who are real fans.

I myself will only pay to watch specific fights rather than most of the fights on the television that used to be shown 15 years ago (in the UK) because do I really want to spend the money and stay up till 5am in the morning?

The answer is not really.

There are a multitude of reasons.

1) There are 68 world champions if you combine all of the pro boxing promotions together.

2) The heavyweight division is basically dead.

3) Promoters aren't doing a very good job at making fights well known.

4) UFC and just MMA in general is on the rise and taking children as fans before they get a change to watch boxing.

5) Floyd Mayweather is the only one who is keeping boxing alive really. Could you even imagine the sport without him? Well get ready to.

The list goes on and on man.

Are you kidding me!!! This month was probably one of the GREATEST months for boxing ever. There were 3 mega fights this month and they were all great. You guys are saying this b/c there isn't a major name in the Heavyweight division other than Klitchko.

In the past there was just a handful of titles. Right now there so many federations, titles, weight classes etc. you cannot keep up with it. For instance, can you name every champion right now? The majority of people can't.
