Don't buy it out of a box - make it yourself! (It's easy enough.) Chocolate frosting is the classic accompaniment to yellow cake. Serves 12.
Ingredients:
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
2/3 c. butter
2 eggs
1 1/4 c. milk
1/2 tsp. salt
1 3/4 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Steps:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. Grease and lightly flour two round 8-inch cake pans and set aside.
3. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a small mixing bowl and set aside.
4. Beat butter or margarine with a hand mixer at medium speed for 30 seconds in a large mixing bowl.
5. Add sugar and vanilla and beat well.
6. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
7. Add dry flour mixture and milk alternately, beating on low speed after each addition until just combined.
8. Pour batter into prepared cake pans.
9. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
10. Cool cakes in pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
11. Remove cakes from pans and cool thoroughly on racks.
12. Frost with your favorite frosting.

The basic simplest recipe:
6oz self raising flour
6oz butter
6oz sugar
3 eggs (beaten)
First set oven to 180C. Either get a bun tray and line with cases or line 2 x sandwich tins.
Cream together the sugar and eggs, slowly pour in the egg mixture while beating the mixture continuously. If it starts to curdle add a tablespoon of flour. Once all the egg mix has been combined beat in the flour until well mixed.
Add this mixture to sandwich tins and bake in centre of oven for 20 mins. It is ready when you lightly press your finger on the top of cake and it springs back. Remove from tins and leave on wire rack to cool. Cover or fill to taste.
Easy peasy....with practise you can add other ingredients and experiment.

*Break the eggs into a mug or something and beat
*Add a little egg to the marg and sugar

*add a little flour
*beat in
*keep adding little by little until everything's in

*it's done when it's golden and springs back up when you gently push the top with your finger
-------------------------------------
To make a lemon drizzle
cook in two tins (or use the same tin twice)
beat together butter, icing sugar and lemon zest (about 3 tbsp of butter and enough icing sugar to make it tast buttercreamy, can't remember quantities off the top of my head)
sandwich this between the two halves of the cake when they're cool (else the buttercream will melt)
mix the lemon juice with some icing sugar so that it's reasonably thick
drizzle this over the assembled cake
--------------------------------------------------
to make chocolate cake
add two tablespoons of cocoa powder to the cake mix, and cook in two tins
make buttercream icing with butter, icing sugar and some cocoa powder, and put between the two halves
------------------------------------------------------
to make victoria sponge
use 2 tins
make plain butter icing
spread the buttercream on the top of the bottom half
spread jam (strawberry or raspberry are good) on the bottom of the other and put together

8oz marg/butter
8 oz self raising sifted flour
4 eggs weighing approx 8oz with shells!)

you can adjust quantity as i use this for a large cake, and also do a 12oz one so my daughter can make approx 6-8 fairy cakes out of mix! also!
choc cake.... i always add gravy browning small ammount to give a rich colour you cant taste it!!!
for fudge cake filling melt some choc then add double cream.... good luck.

4 oz's s/r flour
4oz's butter/margarine
4 oz's sugar
two eggs.
cream butter or marg with sugar till pale and fluffy.Beat eggs, add to mixture gradually, beating well inbetween additions. Add sieved flour, bit by bit, folding in with a metal spoon.Divide mixture between two sandwich cake tins and place in oven (moderate heat) till lightly brown. to make from scratch -eggs and flour that is self rising and sugar and milk a extract lemon or vanilla what ever you want and mix until well blended and bake
difference between self rising flour and all purpose flour is self rising has everything in it like yeast and baking soda to make the cake rise and all purpose does not you have to add all that stuff.

Geekiev is the correct answer. the one with 4oz of each ing. is wrong it would be flat.
6oz of everything (flour butter sugar) 3 eggs, (one egg = 2oz)
You can make it bigger by increasing by 2oz for everything and so on. It just takes longer to cook. and if you go really big you would need bigger tins to cook them in.
