Are his ears dirty, is there black residue in them? Have you cleaned his ears, or had a vet do it? He may have ear mites, and if so, you need to take him to a vet for ear mite medication. If you don't , and he continues to scratch he will probably develop a hematoma, which is fluid collecting between the two layers of skin on the ear. If this happens, it is VERY VERY PAINFUL, and he will need to have surgery to open it up to release the fluid, and he will probably have a deformed ear after that- called a cauliflower ear. It would be far less expensive to see a vet now and get the medications. You could try cleaning the ear yourself, but you run the risk of pushing the dirt further into the ear and making it worse, so I don't recommend this. Also, you would need to "smother" the ear mites first with a tiny bit of light mineral oil, or an ear cleaner from the vet. But the vet also dispenses an ear antibiotic to prevent infection, and you cannot get this without taking the cat in. If this is your first time with this problem I would advise going to the vet,and they will also show you how to clean the ear. You should also check for fleas, especially if he has open sores around his ears. Again, I strongly recommend you see a vet, and to do it soon. Hope this helps......

Take her to the vet. It is probably ear mites, which is usually simple to clear up, but it is important to find out for sure what is wrong. Your cat can't tell you if she is in pain, or if something is bothering her; by the time you notice something is wrong, she really needs help.

And make sure you find a good vet. Ask friends with pets who their vet is, and whether that vet was able to help their pet. Most vets are very good people (mine are wonderful!) but there are careless vets out there, so you want to be careful.

She probaly has ear mites. If her ear is bleeding from the scratching you can clean it and let it heal. If it is down from her inner ear, then take her to the vet. Sometimes the ear mite medicines that you buy at the store don't work, but you can always try them first. They usually will have alot of extra brownish black ear wax too. I usually call my vet when in doubt and ask questions. Good luck to you and your poor kitty.

She probably has ear mites. There is medication available for it, but it can't be used with open sores. I use baby oil...it drowns the mites without hurting the sores, and is non-toxic.

Hope this helps!

THINK OF IT THIS WAY. IMAGINE YOU BEING YOUR CAT AND YOUR EAR IS BLEEDING. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A RASH OR BEEN BITTEN BY AN ANT, MOSQUITO, ETC. REMEBER HOW MISERABLE YOU FELT WITH THE ITCHING. THATS YOUR CAT. ONLY SHE IS BLEEDING. CALL THE VET. ROXX
