I think it is when it is executed correctly. Today a lot of people are ignorant about the law and their rights so they usually get screwed with out knowing it. My favorite example is watching cops, any episode, half of the stuff the cops do is a violation of the 4th but people don't know it so they go along with whatever the cop says. Every time the cop is questioning the person about the crime with out the suspect waiving his right to legal counsel is a violation and if you watch the show that is all they do. i like to rant.

Unfortunately it is the best available. Our legal system would be more effective if the prosecutters could use all of the evidence. unfortunately the defense attorneys are able to have a lot of great evidence eliminated from court. A few years ago my sister in law was murdered as was her unborn baby. The little weasel got three years because important informaiton was not admitted, like the part of him being on probation. He wound up serving not even a year of that time.
On the other hand there are some cases that a defense is not allowed to be mounted. In one state, a child can accuse a parent of abuse and never be questioned by a defense attorney, all they need to do is sign a complaint and the parent is assumed guilty. Yes this does protect a victim, however there are people that sit in prison and have their lives ruined because of it.
Justice in this country depends on how much money you have, not wether you are guilty or innocent.

um, no. Has the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina been cleaned up and people's lives restored as much as possible? no where near. Are we still fighting a pointless war in Iraq? yes. Are serial killers and rapists being let out of prison? Yes. I would go on, but I fear I would anger many people. So no, our legal system is not effective.

No, not at all. I don't think it will ever be effective. This is truly a very sad case.

Not at all. Most people who go to jail return when they get out. They're not being rehabilitated. They're just getting into more trouble.

No. However, if one is rich you will be able to buy justice. Poor people must beg for mercy.
