A nickname is a shortened form of a proper name, or a descriptive name added to or replacing the actual name of a person, place, or thing. The purpose can vary as widely as those who choose to use the nicknames. It could be out of love, respect, kindness, playfulness...or disrespect or mean-spiritedness.

There is usually history behind a nickname. I know of someone called Cookie because when they were younger, they would steal cookies from a cookie jar.

there is no purpose to them really, just fun alternatives to your original name.
for example if your name is Christopher, isn't it nicer when your friends call you Chris or something else, it is less formal too.
