In my family they happen in 3's. Our neighbor recently had 2 deaths (a 22 y/o and a 65 y/o) in his family within just a couple of weeks and said he was waiting for #3. He said it goes like 1, 2, 3 and then nothing for a number of years. I just wondered if this was coincidence for us or if others notice this in their family.

They come in three's because you notice it. My brother, then my father and then my sister died. But, that doesn't mean anything. Before that my grandfather and my grandmother died. There was a good deal of time between each death and they were not related; old-age, old-age, suicide, smoking, and probably undiagnosed diabetes. It also happened in three different states, one in MA, 2 in TX, and 2 in CA. Do you see a pattern of twos there? Of course you do I pointed it out. The human mind sees things by patterns. If you recognize one person by a quick glance it is because they match a pattern you have for them in your memory. You can also mistake one person for another if they closely match the one in your memory. You can read because your mind recognizes the patterns of letters and words. Since your mind is trained to look for patterns you see them even if they are not really there.

If there were truly a pattern then they would have died after the same time, or of the same cause, or at the same time of day. Did that happen? Even if it did it is still a coincidence. To be a real pattern you need enough events to make a statistical difference, say 100.

It is a coincidence, just bad "luck" that it happened that way. It wasn't "meant to be" or some kind of divine pattern. That is just the way things happen sometimes.
Look at the Kennedys. People think they are cursed, but in reality, it has more to do with political prominence and insane murderers, some family members' risky behaviors or accidents (flying planes in bad weather, skiing dangerously), and illnesses. Plus, since there are so many of them, it seems like they have "a lot" of deaths...but more deaths are likely to happen with more people, obviously. Take nursing homes (mostly elderly or sick people) and older people in general (grandparents, great aunts, etc.)
There is also a phenomenon that some doctors refer to as "broken heart syndrome", resulting from the stress of grief or other events, but I don't know much about it.

In my family it seems like deaths come in 9. Of course that's just because my great grandfather had a seizure behind the wheel of the van and drove off the bridge.

I honestly can't say I've ever noticed such a phenomenon. I've heard about it, but I've never experienced anything like it, nor has anyone else I know. I'm sure that when it does happen, it's just random coincidence.

I have, however, heard of sneezes coming in threes. LOL.

I always have deaths in 3s but they aren't always in my family... jsut deaths of people around me. Like when my grandfather died he died a week after my friends mother died and I forget who the 3rd one was but that how it works for me.

well, in my family it seems that every time we have a new baby someone dies, 2 days before my cousin had her first baby my grandma died, then when my other cousin had her little boy my step-grandpa died, and when my other cousin had her little boy my aunt died
