The stereotypical hippie is perceived as being stupid and lazy. Also, we might be a little jealous of their care-free lifestyle.

Hippies have been around forever. We thought we invented them in the sixties, but when you research Romanian Gypsies we find them in Europe for several thousand years. Hippies and Gypsies like to present a gentle side of them for public relations. The truth is that their non-violent credo is often just lip service. The Manson family lived and believed in the "Hippie" philosophy. However it took one deviant personality to form them into a murderous band.
The hippie fantasy is to live on the land for free and not fight or get involved with political issues. Housing should be home made (shanty), love should be free (shack-up), food should be harvested from nature (stolen), and clothes should be made from all natural substances (smelly). People are mean to them because they squat on public and private property, use illegal drugs, perform sex acts in public, and steal from their neighbors.

Because hippies, like Christians and many other groups, are given a negative stereotype that many people can't see beyond.

i've spent way too much time hanging out with "hippies" and my big problems with them were, everything was way to centered around smoking pot, i got real sick of everything being made from hemp rope, and way too many references to grateful dead lyrics which they seemed to apply to everything and named themselves from, and sometimes its also just a good idea to be wearing shoes.
yes many were concerned about social issues, but having to always smoke a bowl before doing anything is a sure way to get nothing much done....

Because they don't bathe and smell like marijuana mixed with B.O. Not to mention they want everything for free!!
