Sponges are a very simple form of animal life. They use the support of the surrounding water (rather than an internal or external skeleton) to maintain their shape. Living sponges to not absorb seawater, they simply live in it like all other sea creatures.

Here's a fun fact about sponges: if you separate the cells of a living sponge they will reform into a functioning sponge. Don't try this with your cleaning sponges at home--they're not alive!

I don't really know how much deeper the ocean would be. I do know that not all sponges we see are from the ocean. If it is labelled natural sea sponge, or natural sponge, it is from the sea. The rest are man-made.

Sponges aren't naturally absorbtive until they're dried and treated. Before the advent of synthetic sponges, they used to be a primary export of Florida.

it would be shallower.

volume of the sponge in the ocean = volume of water in it + volume of dry sponge. If you remove the sponge, the water volume remains, but the sponge volume is gone, lowering the water level in the ocean.

It maybe deeper because one life feeds off another life in an ocean, take one species out and it affects others.
