I think it truly depends on the make/model of the car you are purchasing. Some cars have great reputations and can afford higher mileage because they have a long life with a low history of problems. Also the year matters...they say you drive approximately 15,000/year. If someone has 45,000miles on a car in one year...they are probably highway miles and haven't caused a high amount of stop and go wear and tear on the car. Kelly Blue Book.com and carfax.com are great resources that can tell you if a car has too much mileage and make suggestions on why that could be.

Mileage is only one factor in buying a used car. If the mileage is high but they're highway miles, that's acceptable. A big factor is whether the previous owner did the regular maintenance and kept it in pretty good shape. Check out the Used Car Guide from Consumer Reports too to get the low down on various models, whether they've been lemons or performers.

This question cannot be answered without extra information.
It depends on your budget and the type of car.
Usually it's better to accept a higher mileage and go for a younger car instead of the other way round - if not too extreme, of course.

you've gotta get between 25-30 milles ger gallon highway minimum. Don't buy a truck! unless you dreamed of being a truckdriver when you were little, and I can't imagine you did.
I have been driving Hondas for a while. Great on gas, on mileage, cheap maintenance-and there's a lot of them around, so you should be able to find some used. Good luck!
