It discourages the riff-raff element. I've already been put off coarse fishing because of the amount of idiots/@rseholes on the banks these days, especially the carpers. I've now taken up fly fishing and have to say that everyone I've met so far have been absolute gentlemen. If you have a genuine passion for it you'll pay the money. If it costs 50p all day then all sorts will be turning up.

Because there is only one trout in the country, and although it moves around a lot to give all anglers a sporting chance of catching it, it needs the money for hotel accommodation, transport, petrol and sundry expenses

because trout and salmon fly fishers are snobby and elitist. I caught six wild brown trout in 45 minutes by trotting a maggot on a float in a small river in lancashire and was told that its not the 'proper' way to do it! they tasted great!

While it can be very expensive to fish for trou in the England, their are many places around the country from small streams, lake to big reservoirs that provide very resonable fishing.
anything from free to £20 per day is very good value.
