It comes with the territory. Death is something that is going to happen regardless and it is hard to have a pet and have it die. I've lost a dog before and it was hard, I couldn't stop crying. But you do move on and it does get easier. Having a dog, having it be part of you family, loving it and playing with it is amazing and if you think that its something you can't handle then its better that you hold off on getting one. Until then, there are a few things you can do, you can dog-sit for friends/family or neighbors that might be going on vacation or maybe you can volunteer to walk a neighbors dog everyday or once a week. You can also volunteer at an animal shelter.
Good Luck!

Oh, that sounds sad for you. I think I know what you mean. The thing is that death is the one thing in life that is inevitable. We will all die sooner or later. But while we are here, we can make the most of it.

You sound a very caring person and any dog would be lucky to have you as an owner. Think of the happiness you could share together, and what a good life you could give your dog. Yes, it is very very sad when a pet dies, they are like a close friend or member of the family. But try and focus on how lovley it would be while your dog was here, look after the dog as well as you can and enjoy!!

I kinda know where your coming from!
Ive got a golden lab and a springer spaniel....i love them as if they were my kids!!
Gypsy my golden lab was 8yrs old in May,about 10 months ago i noticed a lump on her side, after bottling out of taking her to the vets for a few weeks cos i feared the worse, i finally took her and to my relief, i was told it was a lump of fat-i agree, Gypsy is extremely over weight, but i dont like her being referred to as a lump of fat!! Anyway, nearly a year on, and she has about 6 lumps....im not taking her to the vets cos shes not bothered about the lumps, they dont hurt her but it has suddenly got my mind into overdrive....what if the worst is wrong with her.....how would i tell the kids, what would i do without her, my other dog would crumble if Gypsy wasnt here....so i can honestly see what your on about-the last thing you need is sarcastic answers! If you really want a dog, but without the heart ache, you could always adopt a dog at the dogs trust or the rspca, or just advertise to walk peoples dogs and if you charge for doing it, if you dont particually want the money you could donate it to a dog sanctuary? here a little list of places that have dogs you can 'adopt'

http://www.sfaw.co.uk
http://secondchanceanimalrescue.org.uk

many tears is one of the loveliest places i know of, the couple that run it are amazing, so dedicated to the rescue centre they run!
Im sure they can all do with someone adopting or helping with donations in keeping the dogs they have in every day!

Then if and when your ready to get a dog....who knows!!!

Death is part of life... maybe you should consider volunteering at an Animal Shelter... the only problem is the Animals are euthanized if there is no home for them and I think you'dfind that even more tragic.

My suggestion, go down to the Animal Shelter, pick out a puppuy that you like. (Play with them all to see which fits your personality) and enjoy a long life with your new dog. Remember, it's a major responsiblity.

Volunteer to be a foster parent for a rescue society - they often need people to keep dogs temporarily until their homes are ready. Or raise puppies for the Seeing Eye Dogs to be police dogs or something. You keep them until they're 18 months or so old, giving them basic training and housebreaking, etc. At the appointed age, the society takes them and puts them into the specialized training program for service dogs.

Why dont you volunteer to walk dogs that are in rescue centres. that way you get a 'doggie fix' but without the responsibility of dog ownership.
If thats not enough for you just get a dog! it isnt going to drop dead tomorrow and everyone dies in the end!

Contact your local seeing eye dog foundation. They look for people to keep puppies until they are old enough to start their training. Also sometimes Humane Societys does the same.

i struggled with the same thing, but i got a dog anyways, right after my dad died, and i believed she helped me through it by keeping my spirits up, she is 6 now and i know someday she will leave me but the years i had with her will always be in my heart, and yes when she dies i will cry, but i believe she will be in heaven with my dad. So please get a dog, and you will never regret it,you'll give a good home and the dog will give you happiness.
