I have just installed & mounted a new 42" flat panel tv above my fireplace. Since it is a High Definition tv my cable company requires me to use a cable box in order to receive the HD signal. However, now I can't figure a good place to put the cable box. Where could I put the cable box without it looking out of place or awkward? I thought of putting the cable box in another location within the room but the only outlet for the cable wire is behind where the tv hangs now. (it s a brand new home and the cable was wired to this location specifically for a flat panel.) The fireplace does not have a mantle either.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

The only idea I have so far is this:

YOU DON'T MENTION WHAT MODEL TV YOU HAVE.
ALMOST ALL NEW 42" AND ABOVE HAVE A SLOT FOR A "CABLE CARD" WHICH DECODES SCRAMBLED CABLE SIGNALS. THE FCC REQUIRES IT. CABLE COMPANIES DON'T LIKE TO ADVERTISE IT BECAUSE IT'S A LOT CHEAPER.
TIME/WARNER CHARGES $1.75 A MONTH FOR THE CARD AND YOU DON'T NEED THEIR REMOTE. YOU CAN'T GET "ON-DEMAND" BUT IF THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT TO YOU CHECK AND SEE IF YOUR TV ACCEPTS THE CARD.

so far, you're on the right track. and, judging from what you've specified, it looks as if that's the only viable option for you. it looks as if i'm gonna have that same/different dilemma when i get my Polaroid 32" in a few weeks. see, i live in an apartment with a fireplace and i plan to mount the tv over it too. the thing is, now i will need a place for my components (cable box, DVD player, PlayStation, etc.) my solution was going to be a separate shelf for all my units. sure, it would take away from the picture-esque motif i was going for, but that's my only option since i can't tear down walls and hide wires in my temporary home. your situation is a bit more unique though, because you can afford to do just as i'm alluding to. if it is possible to tear down (not even all the way) the wall and run all wires you think you might need (even ones you might not need at that point) and feed it to a spot, say under the couch perhaps? (i'm just vividly brainstorming here) any place inconspicuous so that you can obtain the aesthetic harmony you seek. what i'm suggesting, though, is costly both with time and money, but i figure you just got a big ole flat panel TV in your house, you could afford to modify the wall to accommodate what you're trying to do.

put it in the same place you put your dvd player or receiver box. you can just place it right on top.
