Wow, there is quite a lot of misconceptions about deafness just by reading all of your answers! I am deaf, and I will clear up some of those misconceptions.

First there is this misconception that just because a person is deaf that they have never heard anything. Don't you know that we have hearing aids available in this time and age? What does "HEARING" aid mean? It means it aides our hearing.

There is this misconception that to be deaf means that they are 100% stone deaf. Don't you know that deafness includes the range of hearing loss from beginning just right before it is categorized as "hard-of-hearing" all the way to the point where it becomes "complete deafness". The majority of the deaf people fall between those two points with between 85%-65% hearing loss.

With whatever amount of hearing that is left even 10%-30%, can be greatly enhanced with digital hearing aids. They cost $2,000 just for one, and if we're going to spend that much money, they better work! LOL

With hearing aids, we can now hear A LOT more than one thinks. Why I can tell the difference between my sister talking and my mother talking in the background, and the difference between one speaking in Spanish and English in the background. For your information, I am profoundly deaf which means I have 85% hearing loss.

All deaf people have to learn English regardless of whether they sign or not. I mean how can one go through school without reading and writing in English? So let's clear up the misconception that just because one only signs does not mean they are not bilingual. They ARE bilingual.

The brain does not need to "hear" nor needs perfect speech in order to think. That is not the only way it can process information and communicate. It can communicate visually also.

Since I've been speaking all my life, so yes I can hear myself think just like you do. I probably use a combination of both "hearing" and "visual" like seeing words in their visual format but I'm always "talking" to myself in my head.

For those who mainly sign would most likely use visual communication in their head, like a combination of seeing words and signs. Many deaf do have some idea of how words are proncounced, so I'm sure they do the same like I do. It's just a combination of something that might be considered "hearing" even though it may not sound perfect mentally. The brain does not need perfect speech in order to understand the language, you know what I am saying? One's own interpretations of how words are spoken would be good enough for their own brain to "hear" themselves think because it is just symbolic of the meaning that is being conveyed.

I'm not sure, but it is obvious that you can't because you obviously DON'T think and certainly cannot spell! There is no such word as "deth" meaning can't hear - the word is DEAF. And another word ... meaning can't think - it DUMB.

Deaf people hear in a different way then you think. If you think about a steak, you can imagine the way it would taste. If you think about a child, you can think about the act of playing with a child. This is what it is like for a deaf person.

lol. ohhh...that's a good question. It's spelled deaf by the way.
I have no idea how they hear themselves think since obviously they've never heard their voices or even words. I think they probably think in more visual terms. If they know sign language, maybe they think in sign language.

Oh, wow, that's a really interesting question. They can definitely think, but I'm not sure if they'd think in actual English words, because how would they know what they sound like if they never heard them before?

OK, first it's deaf. Second, I would say yes. If they know how to read then they can pronounce the words in their head.
