Beta is a level of testing.

First programmers write code, then they test it. When it runs they way they want it, the hand the software over to users that will be using the software when it is done for testing. That 'second level' of testing is called Beta testing. I guess the first level is the Alpha test.

Alpha and Beta are the first two letters of the Greek Alphabet, so its like Test Level A, Test leve B

You have software that is being tested at the Beta or B level.

Big companies like Yahoo! and Microsoft use betas as test software that anyone can use for free so they can find bugs and see if the population likes it or not. The betas are usually turned into the real versions. Ex: Internet Explore 7.0 Beta 2 will turn to I.E. 7 on Windows Vista (when it comes out).

A program goes through beta before it's officially released. There's a good chance it may screw up at some point. They put things out on beta for the public as a stress test to see what all could go wrong. The usually appreciate contact on what bugs you experienced.

It means that the software is still in testing phase to work out bugs and such. It is not yet available to the general public for a production environment.
