Tips: What kind of riding will you be doing....cross country, off road, transportation, recreational, etc. How much money are you willing to spend($50.00 or $500.00 plus)? Are riding long distance (50 miles or more) or just across town? Does the weight of the bike matter? Does the style matter. Check out a few bike magazines (Bike World, etc). Do you want a domestic or foreign bike (Huffy, Mongoose, BMX, Univega, etc)? Do you want single or multi-speed bikes(10-speed, 15-speed, etc.)?

Figure out your budget. ANd don't go over it.

Think hard on what you want your bike for, what you want it to be capable of.

Reasearch! Read thru the bike mags to get ideas, but DON'T take them to be the gospels. Check MTBR.com, or it's road bike counterpart to see what other riders say. There are other websites as well. do you homework.

Light. Cheap. Comfort. (To paraphrase...) pick any two.

Now you're ready to go to the bike shops and ask questions and let them know what you're willing to spend. Don't worry about not knowing much. If it's a good shop they will do all they can to find you the ride that's right. After all, they want your return business.

ROAD BIKE or Mountain bike? Get the right size, buy in a real bike shop ( not WalMart or dept.stores ), test ride it, wear a cool helmet ( Giro,Bell) and other protection ( gloves, sunglasses, bib shorts,lights---if you plan to ride at night). And watch DVDs of riders ( i.e. Tour de France, Freewheel Burning etc.) ----and make sure you learn maintenance ( check BICYCLING website and find about their latest books! www.bicycling.com).

Decide what type of riding you want to do. Gather information on the best bike for you. Shop around.

Without a more specific query, a more specific answer is difficult.

go to a thrift store, buy a bike and fix it up yourself. If you fail, it will still help you understnad what you need/want.
