Shitzu. They are not "timid" persay, but they are mellow, which is what I think you probably want, good with people, children, very loving, easy to care for, though they do require regular grooming. I don't believe they shed though. Papillions are also very loving, fairly mellow dogs you might like. Do your research though on the breed you choose to be sure that it will fit your lifestyle. Sometimes a larger dog may be better suited to your lifestyle even if you live in an apartment than a smaller dog. There are many great web sites on the net that will tell you all about the different breeds. I highly reccommend adopting from a shelter where a member of the staff will help you find the right dog for you that also needs a home. I adopted my dog Amos (Golden Retriever Lab mix) from a shelter near here at 7 months old and he is such a great dog, he fits in so well with our lifestyle and family.

Dogs of any breed have their own personality, just as people do. Find a breed you like and that fits your lifestyle, and find an individual with the right personality from there.

"Timid" is NEVER a good thing- are you looking more for calm and mellow?

The Italian Greyhound is a timid dog and weight in about 7-14 lbs. Just keep in mind that due to its timid nature it does not do really well with small kids who will pester it.

"Timid" isn't really a good personality trait to look for. Timid, when applied to dogs, is nervous and shy, and easily frightened or spooked.

Gentle, quiet, sweet, or things of that nature would be better terms to look for.

There are many, many breeds of dogs that would fit those catergories. Even very large breeds. Check out http://www.akc.org for very useful information on temperament of specific breeds. Good luck to you!

Why on earth would you want a timid dog? This is not something one should want in a dog, a timid dog can become very fearful and bite! Maybe you mean something else?

TIMID:
ADJECTIVE:Inflected forms: tim·id·er, tim·id·est
1. Lacking self-confidence; shy. 2. Fearful and hesitant: problems that call for bold, not timid, responses.
ETYMOLOGY:Latin timidus, from timre, to fear.
