After living together as a couple I don't think it wise to just be roommates as hard feelings may result if either of you start dating other people. As far as you having no place to go you know that is just BULL!!! Get yourself a small place of your own, you will be much happier. Learn from your mistakes and don't move in with someone without a marriage certificate.

First evaluate your current arrangement. Are you on the lease, or mortgage, of the place you live? When will the lease come up for renewal or can you get out early?
Next, hopefully you are still talking to each other, try to decide how to split up the household goods you have. Maybe take turns picking things.
Now it gets down to where. First what can you afford? Will you need a roommate to share the costs? Are you uncomfortable living alone? If you want to be alone, and can afford it, start looking for an apartment. Maybe only a 6 month lease to try it out. Be sure to check out crime in the area before you rent. Saving $20 a month could cost you a lot more.
If you want a roommate start checking at work or your church. Any old schoolmates that you may want to ask?
Try to mark everything you own. Find someway so there is not a problem later. Spend time talking about how you will share expenses.(IE. Food, utilities, cleaning supplies, etc.)

make a plan...and set a date that works for both of you. (Of course this means you have communicated fully that the situation does not work for you).
You might find you work better together focusing on helping each other survive and thrive this break up.
Don't do it again!

finish out the lease and go your separate ways. Both of you should look for room mates if you cant pay rent on your own.

Bite the bullet and leave. You'll live in hardship for a while but it will turn around if you try.
