Sometimes an expression of love is heartfelt and accurate, whereas sometimes it is an expression like a cliché or an idiom. The second use may not be wrong per se, it is just a customary expression never really intended to accurately convey the feelings felt, but instead to poetically convey the feelings felt.

That being said, the amount of answers possible for a question like yours could probably number infinitely, so what might be some general or common reasons why people say the word "love" if they don't really mean it?

I take it you mean that the reasons are negative. Here are some negative reasons, keeping in mind that there very well may be POSITIVE reasons a person uses the word "love" while not really meaning it.

1. FEAR. Sometimes a person falls out of love with another person and rather than deal with the life changes that might come with such a shift in feelings, the person tries to mask those feelings but making them seem the same as always. Thus, the feeling of merely liking a person stays verbally as "I love you," an attempt to maintain the status quo in the relationship.

2. MANIA. Sometimes a person feels so good about him/herself that s/he can't help but express love for other others as well. These feelings for others are usually powerful and profound but temporary. They are largely dependent on the mood state the person is in and his/her self-esteem. Once the mood drops, the feelings likely drop with it.

3. INFATUATION. Sometimes a person obsesses about a person to the point of making the person into an ideal that is not in line with the actual target of infatuation. So, when a person expresses his "love for Jane," it is not love for the actual Jane but instead an idealization that IS NOT Jane. It is called "infatuation" in the lesser sense, and probably called "obsession" in the more serious sense. It may be "love," but the love is misdirected toward something real when it is actually love for something not yet realized.

4. LINGUISTIC CARELESSNESS. Plenty of people speak without listening to what they might be communicating. So, one person might say "I love you," and mean it only fashionably and superficially, while the hearer might take that as "She loves me!," an expression of some deeper or hidden feeling. This is not necessarily always carelessness on the part of the speaker, except perhaps where the hearers are obviously sensitive to what speakers say. But other times it is. If you constantly mischaracterize your feelings to others, they may think you have feelings you do not really have, and treat you respective of the ways your classified your feelings rather than treat you with respect to your ACTUAL feelings. I.e., if you say you're "really, really sad," a person may treat you that way even though you might just be merely "down."

This is by no means a complete list, but hopefully it touches on some of the main reasons for you. :)

Cheers!

Love has many levels it is an expression of emotion - true, love is a strong word and it should be meant before it is said but also you have to accept the level it was given. I tell people i love them all the time because I honestly have a place in my heart for them. it does not have to mean I love you like a mate or a lover. It does not hurt to ask if your uncertain at which level your being loved. You can say oh do you love me like a friend or perhaps like your dog. sure you say you love me but can you clue me in. But for the most part you know what level by when they say it.

Love is a powerful word used for powerful moments.

Some people don't know what it means and they still use it when they think it's appropriate. Other people know the word so well, and are so familiar with it's connotations, they use it too easily and it detracts from their intended use.

The best thing about the word love - is that it's the only emotion that can hurt as quickly as it can heal.

Because its a powerful word and many people are hypnotized by the mere saying of the word. They forget to see how the person expressing love SHOWS them love.

your question is something which is really hard to answer...if you do get an answer here i too would also be interested to know...even i dont understand why do people say things that they dont really mean but i guess this way we atleast save ourselves from the sin of hurting someone...when it happens to us, we make sure we dont do it to anyone...it makes us a better person...everyone learns it during sometime in their life even those people who hurt us...good things in life are learnt the hard way...
