Tequila, like gin, is one of the few liquors where quality makes a huge difference. You can make a great drink with bottom shelf vodka or whiskey, but not with tequila. And a margarita is a drink where quality seems to make a very big difference.
So use quality ingredients. Cuervo, BTW, is not a quality tequila. I would try Patron, Herradura, Tres Generaciones, or some other high end tequila. Also, instead of triple sec, I'd again go high end and use Cointreau. Finally, to give your sweet & sour a little extra taste, squeeze a fresh lime into your drink...
MARGARITA ON THE ROCKS
Highball glass
Coat rim of glass with lime juice, then tap the rim into salt
Add ice to a shaker and mix:
--1 oz Tequila
--1/2 oz Cointreau
--3 oz sweet & sour
--Juice from a lime
Shake and pour into the glass
Garnish with a lime wheel
If you also add 1/2 oz of Grand Marnier, the drink becomes a "Cadillac Margarita".

I've been bartending for a lot of years and also have an annual margarita/guacamole night in the summer for my friends/family.
I never use the mix...have found that fresh ingredients always taste the best.
Of course, it depends on if you're having them blended or on the rocks. For blended, make sure you have some good margarita salt on hand.
Use fresh lemon around the edges of your glass and dip the edges into the margarita salt before pouring the liquid in.
Here's my personal recipe that makes a standard blender full:
1 cup tequila
the juice from 3 fresh limes and 1 fresh lemon
1/4 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of warm water
a bit of lime zest (one rind's worth should do it)
4-5 cups of ice
Stir together sugar and warm water until sugar is dissolved.
Pour all liquid ingredients over ice in blender, blend to desired consistency.
Stir in lime zest.
Enjoy!

First of all.... Sweet and sour is not used in the PERFECT margarita. Sweet and sour is simply high fructose corn syrup and citric acid. Every time someone makes one for me with sweet and sour I get a sore throat from it.
I prefer the following
if fresh limes are not available I use 1 can of minute maid limeade, frozen, concentrated
1and a half cans tequilla
half a can cointreu
fill the blender with ice and blend til smooth

Three parts Tarantula tequila
Three parts Holland House sours mix
One part orange liquor (Blue Curaco for me)
One part Rose's lime juice
This is the best margarita I've ever had! Good frozen and on the rocks. Tarantula tequila has citrus liquor in it, so it really has a great taste.

Perfect & Simple: Salt glass by rubbing lime around edge, then dip it into salt.(suger in lime makes the salt stick),fill w/ ice,one shot of Tequila, one sot of TripleSec,then fill glass the rest of the way with Limeade(MinuteMaid is the best). The taste test will prove it's the best.

I start with the basic margarita mix and tequila. add in a little cointreau or triple sec, and finish off with a splash of beer. The beer mellows the tartness. my friends love them!

give you my frozen recipe. Blender, dump in a half can of frozen limeade, half that amount od tequila, quarter that amount Triple Sec, half can of light or mexican beer, add ice to fill, blend. Turns our really good considering. Best if you match brands of tequia & triple sec. You can even skip the triple sec if you'll squeeze in a half orange.
