My husband bought me a cockatiel last year for my birthday from an exotic petshop.Well the lady did not tell me he was sick.He was only about four months old when we bought him and two weeks later he died.I kept calling her before he died and all she said was to keep trying to hand feed him.I tried telling her,he wouldn't eat.We took him to the avian vet,but it was too late for him.He was too sick.I cried over my Pretty boy for months.People kept giving me birds.(ALL parakeets.)I gave some away, but i still have a three left.Anyway,i want to give all those away too,but keep the same cage.Is it safe and sanitary to do so? I paid a lot of money for it and don't want to get rid of it.I want to use it for my new bird.Any info you guys can give me IS Greatly Appreciated. Many Thanks in advance & Be Blessed! Monica

I don't plan on reusing the perches.I actually wanted to put a specific kind of branch in there for the bird.

It is safe to put the bird in the old cage. It sounds like the person you bought the bird from didn't know a thing about the bird. To hand feed a bird you basically have to force liquified food down it's throat. It's a tricky process, but sometimes it has to be done. You use a small plastic syringe to do it. It's one of the few ways to get food into a bird that isn't eating.
But as for the cage. Just clean it thoroughly and it will be fine. Try not to use harsh chemicals in cleaning it. Water with a small amount of soap mixed in will be adequate.

If you use a 1 part bleach to one part water solution or Mr. Clean or Pine-sol, the cage will be clean enough to reuse. Allow it time to air-dry properly, and rinse well with pure warm water to remove any residues left from the cleaning agents. Since the other bird was sick and you did not have a necropsy done, discard all toys and purchase new ones. Be sure to clean all perches and food/water bowls well, and if there is any doubt that you do not want to use them, don't- especially wooden perches and cracked/repaired ceramic crocks. These can harbour bacteria no matter how clean you try to get them. Just start fresh with all accessories that were associated with the other bird in case it is something that can be transmitted.

This also goes with food. Toss out anything that you would have feed the other Cockatiel if it's an open package. Just for precaution sake, you do not know what made the other bird sick, so throw away any food that was opened at the time you had your other one. Scrub the walls and clean the area where the bird was to get rid of any fecal matter that was left, or any regurgitated food, and vacuum the room the bird was in.

I am sorry for your loss, and good luck with your new baby!

Additional details:
If it is Mananza or Mananzita peches (I have heard it either way), throw them away. Because all wood is a pourous substance, it will hold in chemicals that can make your parrot sick if it is ingested, and may also hold bacteria which can come back evern if you try to zap it with bleach.

It's ok to put your new bird in the old bird's cage providing you clean and disinfect it thoroughly. You are not sure what your bird died of and it could have been very contagious. So, the safest option is to scrub it thoroughly. The best disinfectant to use is Avisafe by the Birdcare company. This is a fantastic product and is now being recommended for disinfecting an area against bird flu. However, if this is not available, I'm sure your avian vet/pet store can recommend a similar product.

I think you should think about what you think is right and your three choices are either get rid of an expensive cage or find another longer lasting pet you spend lots more fun with or keep the empty cage to make you remember dreading the old bird.Hopefully its some good advice cause im new.Sorry.

Clean and disinfect the cage, using a chlorine bleach solution, rinse well at let it dry. I've done that with many bird cages over the years(40 years).

You should be ableto pick up a cleaning solution from your pet store that will sterilize the cage. I would not reuse perches or clips or food bowls though.

If you are going to use a old cage from a sick bird, make sure you scrub it down with clorox bleach first. clorox kills any diseases that are present, and your new bird will be safe.
