Best out there is Avid. That is what professionals use. I used to work at a TV station doing video editing. I had Avid Media Composer. There is also Avid Symphony that has better effects. I used it on a Mac platform with two monitors. One monitor has your timeline and editing and previewing screen. The other monitor has all your downloads (effects, clips, files).

A close second would be Apple's Final Cut Pro. A lot of freelance editors use this because it's much much cheaper. Also, companies will accept work done off this platform. I think you can get a whole (good) computer system with great monitor, etc for $5K. Oh, and make sure you get A LOT of memory!!

Microsoft Movie Maker is great. I made a little, uh movie myself. The software is free and was user friendly. my "friends" didn't believe I was the one who edited and pulled it together all by myself. Have fun with it!!
