While the virus causing cold sores isn't really a big deal, and three out of five adults have it, why be passive? Unless they're very set in their ways, and won't listen, this is the sort of thing you can just say straight out. If they don't understand how cold sores work, it might be time they got some education. You might not want to use the word "herpes", especially if they're older. They'll definitely overreact and think you're saying that they're diseased and unclean. Just treat it like a flu you don't want your child to catch- especially since it never goes away. If they think you're being unreasonable, pull out the big guns- get a pamphlet from your doctor.

This situation is one that you need not to worry about the other person's feelings. Come right out and say it!! Especially on children, kids put their fingers in their mouths so regularly, what is to say they don't transfer to the lower regions?? This happens, cold sores transfer down below, that is why you never let a guy with a cold sore, uh, eat at the buffet. ha Just be stern and compassionate and tell them, LIPS OFF

you tell them that if you catch them kissing your kid, sharing a cup or doing anything that can transmit this to your kid you will cut their freaking lips off and shove them down their neck.

If they have already kissed your kid with said nasty lips, your kid has already picked up the virus, they may not break out for many years, but when they do you can tell them thats its a nice little present from auntie pus lips.

Inform them that you are not trying to be rude but you want them to know that cold sores are viruses and can be transmitted through touching kissing etc. Let them know that you would like it if they please dont kiss your child while they have a cold sore but they can when thewy dont...if that makes sense.

Say your child is not feeling well. Or just say :Do you have a cold sore? If you do you know they can spread you might not want to kiss anyone till you get better."

I do not want my child to have herpes. That is what a cold sore is. They should know not to, but just say cold sores are contagious.
