What Does The Swastika Mean

An ancient cosmic or religious symbol formed by a Greek cross with the ends of the arms bent at right angles in either a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction.

Such a symbol with a clockwise bend to the arms, used as the emblem of the Nazi party and of the German state under Adolf Hitler, officially adopted in 1935.

THe swastika also has a meaning in Hinduism meaning the center of the universe, but that symbol is different from the Europran one because it is the other way around.

The Oldest Known Symbol

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

t0he swastika is a pan cultural symbol. By this I mean it is not original to any one culture. Much like the triangle or the 6 pointed star. Most will tell you its Hindu, howevr it is not, that is merely one place it ahs been found.

As a symbol it generally represents a swirling symbol. It represents the "wheel of life" The wheel of life (as seen in many religions) represents the journey of the individual, the soul and the physical self. From birth to child, to adult hood, old age and death, to birth to child etc. In hinduism this passage is called Samsara. The passage of birth death adn birth. It is the goal of hinduism to leave this passage and transcend it.

The nazi swastika is a reverse swastika and was used deleberatly to bring negative energy.

The swastika was first used by Buddhists on deities and such to represent peace, love and enlightenment.
The Nazi regime took the symbol for their own uses of "unity" and white supremecy.
The swastika has been tainted and is now and forever seen as a symbol of hate....but if you enter a buddhist church and see it there, don't be suprised.

The oldest ones are from a place thought to be troy, and are over 3000 years old. The symbol was a symbol of superstition for many cultures. The U.S. used it in WWI, and the Nazis in WWII. Many think it is a symbol of power.
